The STEAM Society
Coming into this new year, one of the things I am most interested in is the clubs. I can’t wait for Club Rush, and I wanted to learn more about the STEAM Club, which is the club I am most interested in. I interviewed Mr. McKee with some questions about the club because he was the club moderator, but ownership has recently been handed over to Ms. Countryman. In doing so I learned a lot about the club, and that is what I intend to share now. Originally, art had a club and science had a STEM club. Science’s STEM club was more intended for making things, whilst art’s club was just a fun way for the art students to have a creative outlet. They ended up combining the two, forming the STEAM Society. The STEAM Society is for students that would like to make things and learn more about engineering.
The club has around 45 members, of which usually 20 attend the twice a month meetings. The club has attended events such as the San Mateo Maker Faire and the Bay Area Maker Faire, showing off their projects. There they exhibited their pinball machines and other creations. The STEAM Society has made one pinball machine from scratch, and the other one is a refurbished original pinball machine. Covid unfortunately put a halt to these events, but the society plans to host a maker faire this year and also maybe do a collaboration with the Biomed class.
